Welcome to the next installment of our community sewer feature, which aims to highlight great work being done in the Irish dance community, and inspire dancers and dressmakers around the world!
Name: Caroline Summerfield
Where do you live?
Auckland, New Zealand
Tell us about your sewing experience. How long have you been sewing? How did you start? What do you usually sew?
I taught myself to sew on my grandparents musty old singer in the late 80s as I could find clothes I liked. I was around 16.
What’s your favorite thing you’ve ever sewed?
Probably the latest Irish dance dress, as I’m always finding better ways to get the look I want.

How did you/your family get involved with Irish dance?
My husband’s siblings were dancers when they were young, and we thought we would give our girls a go and they took off.

What pattern did you use for the dresses you’re sharing today?
2nd & 3rd Edition Solo Dress
What method do/did you use to achieve your designs?
Having not mastered my embroidery machine yet (I’m sure a whole bunch of “tada!” moments will follow when I do). I applique and free hand embroider. Decorative fabrics and lace are my inspiration and heavy rhinestone placement is very forgiving.
What is your favorite part of the process?
My favourite part is design. I have so many designs scribbled that I know will never be realised.
What was/is the most challenging part for you?
At first it was fit and skirt attachment. Those things are so weird until you get used to it. Now it’s getting my machine to get through the layers.
Where do you get your design inspiration?
Elements of other dresses. Irish dance, ball or skating usually.
What would you tell sewers thinking of making a costume for the first time?
Have patience and plenty of time. Be able to walk away and come back when you’re in the mood. Be prepared to undo and start again many times. Once you have achieved making your first dress and seeing it on stage there will be no stopping you. It’s an amazing feeling!

What’s your next sewing adventure?
I have a few dancers from my daughters dance school lined up for their next dresses. Very exciting!
