Sewer Feature: Lily Platt

This is the fourth post in our Sewer Feature series, which aims to highlight great sewing being done in the Irish dance community and to inspire those who may be considering sewing Irish dance costumes for the first time.  We’d love to feature you too – share your own experience in the link at the bottom of the page!

Name: Lily Platt

Where do you live? Canberra, Australia

Tell us about your sewing experience. How long have you been sewing? How did you start? What do you usually sew?
I started sewing in January [2023] after getting a sewing machine for Christmas. The only sewing I had done was in year 7 textiles (and it was only a pillowcase and some pyjamas).

What’s your favorite thing you’ve ever sewed?
This solo dress and a quilt for my nieces birthday (another sewing first)

How did you get involved with Irish dance?
Danced when I was a child (8-11/12ish) and then took it up again at 25.

What pattern did you use?
4th Edition Solo Dress

What was your favorite part of the process?
Making it custom to my body.

What was the most challenging part for you?
The skirt for sure. Had to unpick so many times until I got it right. Also keeping track of the seam allowances.

Where do you get your design inspiration?
I saw an embroidered appliqué online and built the whole dress from that. I also drew on inspiration from other dresses I’d seen on Instagram.

What would you tell sewers thinking of making a costume for the first time?
Take your time, but have fun!

What’s your next project?
Sewing more clothes for work.
